multiple authenticities

————————
dear friends,
this week i read the book "who are you, really?"
the author brian r. little
offered a way of looking at authenticity that
made my jaw drop and rethink something i thought i knew so well.

"i believe that the search for authenticity is somewhat misguided-
that there is, in fact, no one true you.
in fact, you have have multiple authenticities.
in an era that puts so much weight on the idea of one true self,
this is a complex and controversial notion,
but having multiple authenticities doesn't imply that we lack a moral compass
or that we are disingenuous or even particularly conflicted.
it simply means that being a sincere person can mean different things at different times,
and that who you are really might differ depending on the circumstance."
